Chapter Five

Evan

I wake up beside me in the bed which is completely empty, and the sheets are cold. She’s gone. Something in my gut tells me she’s not in the other room or even in the house. I had a feeling this was going to happen. My heart just aches and I don’t know what I expected. She’s twenty years younger than me. I could practically be her father.

Last night was freaking perfect; every inch of her body they reacted to me and responded with such pleasure. I never felt so wonderful in my entire life, and yet she left without a goodbye. We have one last session on Monday and then Thanksgiving is our last day together. Still, I want to drag her ass back here and demand she stay. Well, what can I do? She has a life of her own, a career, and a future that doesn’t include me. All of our conversations made it clear. There was going to be no happily ever after.

Fuck, one day she may want her husband that can give her everything. My life’s practically over and hers is only the beginning. I punched my pillow in frustration. “It’s bullshit,” I grumble. I need her back in my arms, but it’s pointless.

I stayed in bed and rested longer than normal, wanting to sulk in my misery when Autumn knocked on the door. “Daddy, is everything okay?”

“Yes, sweetheart. Just resting for now.”

“Okay. We’re just worried about you. You need to eat and take your meds.”

“I will be up in a moment.” Shaking off the distress and melancholy, I get up and prepare myself to handle the day.

“Good morning, Jacqueline.”

“Good morning, Evan. How are you feeling?”

“Better now that you’re here.”

“I bet.” As she reaches the steps, I attempt to kiss her cheek, but she sidesteps me and that’s when I realize that another car has pulled up behind her. “My boss has decided to join us for the evaluation. Since this is your last session. He wants to give you the all-clear and ensure you’re all good.”

The prick in the BMW makes his way up my path and nearly slips on the icy ground. “Careful, it frosted over this morning.”

“Yes, as you should too. Is there anyone who can take care of this for you?” he asked me.

“Actually my daughter’s fiancé will be arriving to handle it this morning. We didn’t know the weather had shifted, but it should warm up in the next twenty minutes, so we might not need it.”

“Very true, Mr. Sager. I’m Dr. Stewart.” He reaches out to shake my hand and I take it, giving him a firm shake.

“Please come in.”

“I hope that’s decaf,” she says.

“You know it is.” I smile at her which earns a disapproving look from the asshole doctor.

“I’ve reviewed Jackie’s notes, and you didn’t really need her services. I’m actually surprised they were even approved by your insurance.” He gives her a look of suspicion before turning back to me as if he has reason to believe she was here for ulterior motives.
